The Denae Dassow Series

Named after the mother of Perseus, the similarities end there. Her cousins fear her, afraid of her anger from years past that could harm or kill them. Her hair and eyes are an unnatural earthy yellow. Calling her irises dark citrine is generous and doesn’t make it easier for people to look into them.

Her rather extended family are all practitioners of magic. Many miles of the forested lands of northern Wisconsin are their abode. With the family’s use of magic, they don’t fit well in the mundane world of the late 1970s. Denae hasn’t even bothered with town for years, except as necessity dictates. The forest is her home.

To Rule As In Days Of Olde

When she survives a bear attack at age 16, the nightmares start. After Denae saves the life of a mundane girl she barely knows from town, she may finally have a friend in town. And when she notices something strange about her little brother’s new girlfriend, her entire family could be in jeopardy.

Queen Nymph of the Forest

Denae's free from the entity's grasp, but the nightmares continue. The main good part now is that her hair’s finally grown back enough for a pixie cut.

She jumps at the chance to camp with friends in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, but instead of finding ways to skinny-dip in the Great Lakes, she finds another family of practitioners of magic camping there. Plus, she becomes embroiled in a battle between guardian animals in the forests, not to mention an unplanned meeting with the spirit woman who rules over those forest guardians.

Denae finds similar guardians in her family’s forests, which she’d never noticed before, and these now submit to her. With her new forest powers, she hears the quietness that cries out for new guardian animals. how can she fill the emptiness…create new guardians to fill the voids? And with those who hunt guardian animals and those who rule over them, how can she continue to live while she creates the new guardians?

With the battles now behind her, Denae tries to find some sense of a new normalcy. However, when a woman comes in seeking ways to see through spells of cleansing, like those used by her family after the last battle, her problems start again, or did they just never end?

Add to that Jim’s persistent requests for her to help him restart the guardian animals on his family’s land, the discovery of a consort on otherwise dead lands, and meeting a deputy sheriff who has no spark, but is an accomplished practitioner of magic, it’s hard for her to focus on running the family library, especially when her trauma from the last battle makes it hard for her to concentrate on anything at all.

When Kevin and Ellie are attacked on their way home from The University of Texas, and again at their Uncle John's estate, he sends them to another world that resembles the Texas Hill Country they left — minus the buildings, people, and lakes — with the parting instructions, "Go west to Baemardis."

They do find people and buildings, but it's like Columbus never discovered the New World. The Vikings might have, but then again, maybe not. Still, there is a kingdom here, and they are in charge.
