Named after the mother of Perseus, the similarities end there. Her cousins fear her, afraid of her anger from years past that could harm or kill them. Her hair and eyes are an unnatural earthy yellow. Calling her irises dark citrine is generous and doesn’t make it easier for people to look into them.
Her rather extended family are all practitioners of magic. Many miles of the forested lands of northern Wisconsin are their abode. With the family’s use of magic, they don’t fit well in the mundane world of the late 1970s. Denae hasn’t even bothered with town for years, except as necessity dictates. The forest is her home.
When she survives a bear attack at age 16, the nightmares start. After Denae saves the life of a mundane girl she barely knows from town, she may finally have a friend in town. And when she notices something strange about her little brother’s new girlfriend, her entire family could be in jeopardy.

While Denae’s physical recovery wasn’t easy from her near-death burning, regaining some mental normalcy from being possessed is more challenging. Leah suggests they go camping in Michigan's Upper Peninsula to escape everything before Denae takes over her family’s library. Denae’s only goal is to skinny-dip in all three Great Lakes that border UP.
Denae's relaxation ends when she discovers spirit animals there and a being who controls them. At home, she finds similar guardians in her family forests who will answer her call, but there are areas where no guardians answer. The quietness in those areas cries out for new guardians, but how can she fill the emptiness…create the guardians?
Denae and her family have to battle dark practitioners back at UP, and while disposing of evidence afterward, she meets a tavern barkeep who’s more interesting than he should be. And there's the cute clerk at the local outdoor store who’s always nice to her. And Leah’s leaving for college in Madison.
After that first battle, a much bigger problem confronts Denae. There are practitioner families who want her, others like her, and their guardian animals dead. When the fighting begins, Denae must battle the evil that threatens her family, friends, and her own life and sanity.

When people with strange weapons attack Kevin and Ellie while on their way home to their 'Uncle' John's estate, and then again at the estate, John sends them to another world that looks a lot like the Texas Hill Country where they left from, minus the buildings and people, and Lake Travis.
The parting instructions are, "Go west to Baemardis."
They do find people and buildings, but it's like Columbus had never discovered the New World. The Vikings, maybe, but then again, maybe not. But, there is a kingdom of sorts here, and they find that they are in charge.
